Job description

About the Role Abnormal AI is looking for a Media Relations Manager to join our Communications team and own media strategy across every tier of our PR program - from proactive tier 1 relationship-building with AI and business reporters, to strategic direction for product launches, news announcements, and threat intelligence coverage. You'll build direct, ongoing relationships with AI, tech, business, and security trade press, as well as non-traditional media (podcasts, newsletters, YouTube/creator channels, and other emerging formats). This is a hands-on role; you'll personally run media outreach, not just set direction, while pulling in support from other Communications team members for execution as needed. You'll work closely with Communications leadership and cross-functional partners across the team. This is an individual contributor role for someone who wants real ownership of both strategy and execution. What you will do • Own media relations end to end across tier 1, security trades, and non-traditional media (podcasts, newsletters, creator channels) - setting strategy for the full program, including product launches, news announcements, and threat intelligence coverage • Build and maintain a structured, prioritized view of key reporters covering AI and cybersecurity, and advance those relationships deliberately over time • Personally run day-to-day pitching, including background briefings, trend pitches, and story planting, positioning executives as go-to sources on behavioral AI security, and pulling in support from other Communications team members on high-volume moments • Keep a constant pulse on the media landscape and news cycle, acting as the team's go-to expert on what's being covered and by whom, in order to spot and move quickly on reactive commentary opportunities • Own the creation of tier 1 media Q&As and bylines, and serve as a second pen on press releases and executive messaging • Work directly with executives on media opportunities - prepping them for interviews, identifying and shaping stories, and writing in their voice for bylines and statements • Partner across Marketing, including Threat Intel Marketing, and Customer Marketing, to source storytelling opportunities Must Haves • 4-7 years of experience in media relations or public relations, with demonstrated relationships at tier 1 tech or business outlets • A track record of proactive, relationship-driven media work • Strong judgment on newsworthiness and what's safe to say publicly, especially under time pressure • Excellent writing; comfortable drafting or editing press releases, Q&As, and bylines • Comfortable working directly with senior executives, with experience writing in an executive voice on their behalf • Ability to set strategy and operate autonomously, with strong ownership instincts and follow-through on execution • Collaborative mindset. This role sets direction that other team members execute against, and needs to do that well. Nice to Haves • Familiarity with cybersecurity, AI, or enterprise SaaS • Experience pitching or building relationships with podcast hosts, newsletter writers, or other non-traditional/creator-driven media • Experience managing or directing an external public relations agency • Experience supporting executive communications or C-suite media training • Background operating in a fast-moving, high-growth environment #LI-AK1 Actual compensation will be determined based on several non-discriminatory factors including skills, experience, qualifications, and geographic location. In addition to base salary, this role may be eligible for bonus or incentive compensation, equity, and a comprehensive benefits package.
